SETI Institute Selected as Astrobiology Lead Team

The SETI Institute is proud to announce that it has been chosen as a new lead team for NASA's Astrobiology Institute (NAI), the international research consortium coordinated through NAI's offices at NASA's Ames Research Center. NASA Ames is a long-standing partner of the SETI Institute in the search for life on other worlds, and we welcome this opportunity to deepen our scientific relationship.

The SETI Institute is one of twelve new teams that were selected, each of whom will receive five-year awards at an average annual funding level of one million dollars. The SETI Institute's winning proposal included a variety of research projects examining global-scale processes that have shaped, and been shaped by, the interaction between life and its environment. Some of the funded research will help SETI Institute scientists choose the target stars for the SETI Institute's next-generation search for signs of intelligent extraterrestrial life.

In its review, NASA praised the SETI Institute proposal for its "innovative projects with strong potential to obtain fundamentally new results," noting that "many sub-projects were found to capture the true sense and adventure of astrobiology," and that "the team led by Christopher Chyba is excellently qualified for this ambitious undertaking."

We hope you will join other proud members of the SETI Institute community, its Trustees, and supporters in offering our congratulations to Dr. Chyba and our extraordinary team of scientists and researchers!
