December 20, 2006

SETI Institute Project Scientist, Allen Telescope Array

John Dreher grew up in Pasadena, California, and currently resides in Berkeley with his wife, daughter, cats, fish, and parakeets. In 1969 he earned his BA in Physics from UC Berkeley (in between the riots). John then continued in the Astronomy Department to obtain his Ph. D. in 1978. While there, he helped to build the millimeter-wave interferometer at Hat Creek, which has now been expanded into the BIMA synthesis array. Next, John went to the Very Large Array in New Mexico, which was still in construction, where he aided in the testing/debugging and also became a prolific observer. In 1981 he joined the physics faculty at MIT, continuing his observational work on star forming regions in our Galaxy and on extragalactic radio sources. In 1989 John joined the NASA SETI Project at Ames, and then, after the termination of NASA funding, at the independent SETI Institute, which has continued much of the NASA program as Project Phoenix. He was System Scientist for Project Phoenix, providing technical oversight, RF design, and system testing/analysis. Recently John has served as Project Scientist and Project Manager for the R&D phase of the AllenTelescope Array, an innovative radio telescope (a collaborative projectbetween the Institute and U.C. Berkeley). During the current construction phase he remains the Project Scientist while also working on the development of the newest incarnation of the the SETI detectors for use with the ATA. His strongest skill is "making stuff work."
