Frank Drake

One of the best-known and most revered voices of the SETI Institute is that of Dr. Frank Drake. Often referred to as the Father of SETI, Drake performed the first scientific experiment, Project Ozma in 1960, and today serves both as Director of the SETI Institute's Center for the Study of Life in the Universe, and as Chairman Emeritus of the Institute's Board of Trustees.

Much has been written about this SETI pioneer, his research, his historic experiment, and the equation that bears his name. Perhaps the most informative and engaging account can be found in Drake's own 1992 book, Is Anyone Out There? , co-authored by writer Dava Sobel (author of Galileo's Daughter and Longitude).

While the book is currently out of print, a revised edition is under consideration. In the meantime, the authors have graciously allowed the SETI Institute to share segments from the book with our web and newsletter readers.

In a very special Voices, we will present a series of excerpts from Is Anyone Out There? beginning with a brief excerpt from Chapter Ten, which will be followed by the complete text of the first three chapters. Each excerpt will be accompanied by video clips of Dr. Drake reflecting upon the past and the exciting developments that have taken place since Is Anyone Out There? was written.
