Instructions for Installation and Use of the Interactive Map

February 16, 2007

Installation:
1.  From the CBD website, click on the link on the right, titled download, to Install Astrobiology Site mapping software.  Save the file to your computer.

2. Open the setup file and install the software.  You do not need a serial number on the registration screen.

3.  Once the software is installed, open The Town program.  Click OK on the two dialog boxes that will appear.  The map will display on the screen.

Using the software:
To navigate around the map, use the arrow buttons on the toolbar.  To zoom in or out of an area, use the magnifying glass icons or go to the Tools menu and select Zoom In or Zoom Out.  To select an area, select the Zoom In tool and hold down the shift key while dragging the cursor.  Pressing the F9 key restores the continental US view.

To see Alaska, Hawaii, and/or Puerto Rico, use the selections available from the View menu.

To view the details about a particular institution on the map, select the Drill Down tool from the Tools menu, and click on the star.  The name of the institution, city, state, zip, astrobiology type, number of personnel (for education/training sites, this is listed as 1), latitude, and longitude.

If your computer is connected to the Internet, you may also use the Weather and Time Zone tools to discover more about the location.
